Episode 4: Books
A book is defined as “a number of sheets of paper with words printed on them, fastened together on one edge, usually between protective covers.” You can find books at your local public or school library and in stores, or you can write your own books at home!

(Host Michele Meleen and Guest Host Bob Lingle surrounded by books at Patterson Library in Westfield, NY!)

Featured Books
Read Book: The Incredible Book Eating Boy, Oliver Jeffers, 2006
Henry loves to eat books because they give him knowledge. But, when the books start to make him feel sick can Henry find another way to consume the information shared in books?

New Book: Dreamers, Yuyi Morales, 2018
As an immigrant to the U.S. the main character and her infant son discover a local library and all the ways books can teach them to live in their new home.

Extension Activities
  1. Go on a book scavenger hunt at home, in the classroom, or at your local library. Can you find a book that:
    1. Is older than you
    2. Has only animal characters
    3. Taught you something
    4. Looks like it would taste good (don’t eat it though!)
    5. Is younger than you
    6. Has only human characters
    7. Makes you laugh
  2. Read a picture book that has been made into a movie. Watch the movie and see if you can spot any differences between the two.
  3. Set a goal to read 10, 50, or even 100 books this year. Make a chart or use a notebook to keep track of all the titles, authors, and your thoughts on each book.
  4. Discover a new place to find books in your neighborhood such as a bookstore or library you’ve never been to.
  5. Write your own book about books. Who are your characters? What is so special about the books in your story?
