The Patterson Society
From 1896 to the present, the Patterson Library has faithfully provided the community of Westfield and its surrounding area:
• Outstanding collections
• Programs to stimulate all ages
• Library staff dedicated to meeting the community’s information needs
• Magnificent facility, an architectural jewel
• Multi-cultural institution offering exhibitions of visual art, musical performances, lectures, literary discussions, and film showings
• State-of-the-art technology that provides public access to computers and a computerized catalog of library holdings
The expense of providing quality library collections, programs, technology offerings for library users and the care required for the facility have made it necessary to request additional annual funds from a loyal constituency. As Patterson Library attracts more users, there is a growing need for more volunteer workers to tackle a wide range of tasks. Thus, the Patterson Society was created in 1990 to support the library in its quest to meet the informational and recreational needs of its community of users.
Mission Statement
The Patterson Society is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the interest and welfare of the Patterson Library as a cultural and educational asset.
The Patterson Society strives to accomplish this mission in the following ways:
• By providing direct financial assistance to the Patterson Library through membership dues and fundraising events
• By purchasing equipment for the library that cannot be financed through the operating budget
• By sponsorship of programs designed to enrich the cultural life of the community
• By encouraging gifts, endowments and memorials for the library
• By augmenting the library staff with volunteer workers
• By supporting the policies established by the Patterson Library Board of Trustees
Membership
Membership in the Patterson Society may be accomplished in one of two ways. Individuals who volunteer two hours per week at the Patterson Library for one year automatically become Patterson Society members for the next membership year.
